Chamonix-Mont-Blanc est une ville de montagne et une destination de ski des Alpes françaises, au pied du massif du Mont-Blanc, à proximité de la Suisse et de l’Italie. Son identité est étroitement liée à l’alpinisme, aux glaciers et aux grands dénivelés. Le ski se pratique dans plusieurs domaines répartis le long de la vallée, chacun possédant son paysage et son caractère.
Brévent–Flégère propose des pentes ouvertes et un panorama remarquable face au mont Blanc. Au-dessus d’Argentière, les Grands Montets sont réputés pour leurs versants nord, leur terrain exigeant et le freeride. Accessible depuis Le Tour ou Vallorcine, Balme offre des alpages ouverts et de vastes vues sur la vallée. Les Houches–Saint-Gervais convient particulièrement au ski en famille. Des espaces d’apprentissage, dont La Vormaine et Le Tourchet, permettent aussi de débuter à l’écart des terrains les plus exigeants.
La Vallée Blanche est l’une des expériences emblématiques de Chamonix : un itinéraire glaciaire hors-piste d’environ 20 km, accessible depuis l’Aiguille du Midi. Il n’est ni damé ni balisé, et son accessibilité dépend des conditions en montagne. L’office de tourisme recommande vivement l’accompagnement d’un guide de haute montagne en raison du milieu glaciaire et de ses dangers.
L’Aiguille du Midi et le train historique du Montenvers font également de Chamonix une destination de découverte de la haute montagne. Les domaines occupent des versants et des altitudes différents : les conditions peuvent donc varier sensiblement dans la vallée.
